Beagle

Is the Beagle the Right dog for your?

Beagle's were breed to be hunting dogs. I'm sure you seen them on TV helping hunt down a rabbit or fox. They are still used for this but they also make a terrific family pet. The Beagle are bred with a strong hunting instinct and a keen sense of smell. The American Kennel Club has them listed in the hound group and come in two different sizes. One is thirteen inches or below and the other is thirteen to fifteen inches tall. The colors for both are the same, tan, black and white with a short coat. They can also be found in orange, black, or tan with white markings. They have long droopy ears, dark eyes, and a long tail.

Beagles do well in apartments, but be warned they are a hound dog and do like to howl at any time of day, and bark if it hears any strange noise to warn its owners of danger. Bred to be hunting dogs they have lots of energy they will need to burn off. Daily walks will help out, talking them off the leash can be a bit troublesome if they catch the sent of a nearby rabbit and go chasing off after them. All command will be out the window until they catch there prey. (Click here for a complete list of articles)

The Beagle is a great family pet and does well with children and other animals. They are very playful and spend all day playing catch, another good way to burn off the extra energy. The Beagle are also known to be moody, do something they don't like and they can sulk off for the day.

Beagle's are not a picky eater, they will eat just about anything. You should keep trash cans in a safe place. They should be on a eating schedule, two or three times a day. Don't leave the food in a big food bin and expect them to only eat when hungry. That food bin will be empty in a day and you will have a sick do to take care of.

You should groom your Beagle once a week to help with shedding. Be sure to check the dog's nails and trim them if they get too long.

Quick Tip #1

Make sure you can go to the dog breeders house or where they keep the puppies. If they refuse, walk away from that breeder. They may have a dirty place and the puppies are not properly cared for. Its better to not take a chance then to have to deal with the heartbreak of a dog that has health issues.

Quick Tip #2

One step that many owners never think of when choosing the correct dog breed for them is grooming needs. Short hair dogs will not need as much time to groom, while long hair dogs will need much more time, up to an hour a day. Make sure you know what your in for before you chose the dog for your family.

Quick Tip #3

With all larger dogs, they will need to eat more and do cost more to feed. Always check with your vet to get a proper formulated dog food diet.
